Chapter Twelve

Forty-five minutes later, the service was planned out, at least Wyatt’s part in it. Ruth hurried off to find a venue for the funeral reception and look into catering.

“What are your plans for the rest of the day?” asked Wyatt.

“Well, I’m going to water those poinsettias. Then, I’m contemplating a nap.” Beatrice frowned. “Oops. The Christmas party for the Village Quilters is tonight. I’ll definitely need a nap before that.”

Wyatt smiled at her. “I hoped that would be on your list of things to do. Maybe the rest of the afternoon before the party can be quiet for you.”

“I do have a bunch of wrapping I need to do. And maybe one or two small things to pick up as gifts. And I should bake goodies for the neighbors, too. But you’re right—I need some time to be still.”

Wyatt said, “Why not make a list of the remaining things you need to do and then just tackle one or two things every day? There’s no reason to knock everything out at one time.”

“Excellent point.” She leaned forward to give Wyatt a light kiss.

It ended up still being a moderately productive Monday. Beatrice had taken Wyatt’s advice to heart and gotten enough done that she wasn’t worried about the list of things to do, but not so much that she was worn out again by the end of the day. That evening, Wyatt and Beatrice worked on their jigsaw puzzle again with Christmas carols playing in the background. Soon their puzzle of a cozy cottage with smoke curling through the fireplace and a Christmas tree peeking through the front window started matching the picture on the box the puzzle came in.

Snow was still lightly falling as Beatrice arrived at the Village Quilters’ Christmas party, got out of her car, and walked toward Georgia’s house. Georgia had a knack for crafting, not just for quilts but for just about everything. She displayed a rustic wreath on her front door, crafted from pine branches and holly berries, and tied with a red-and-green plaid bow. She had mason jar lanterns filled with string lights to light her walkway, casting a warm glow on the snow-dusted path. The porch banisters were twined with pine garland, interwoven with burlap ribbon, and hand-sewn quilted angels.

Beatrice walked inside, and Georgia quickly came over to greet her. “Merry Christmas! I’m glad you could make it.”

“Me too,” said Beatrice, giving her a hug. “I love your decorations. I’m starting to rethink my store-bought ones.”

“You know, it’s such a busy time of year for everybody. I cheat and set a reminder on my calendar for the middle of summer. I’m not teaching then and don’t have as much to do. It’s sort of like Christmas in July . . . I go through my ornaments, toss the ones that are broken, and give away the ones I haven’t used in a while. Then I start refreshing my decorations for the upcoming holiday.”

“That is absolutely brilliant,” said Beatrice, meaning it. “I’m going to try that out this summer.
